Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), will be available at a specialist centre at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. It is expected that the operation will be suitable for around 50 Scottish patients a year.

​ 

​Transcatheter Aortic-Valve Implantation will soon be performed in the Heart Centre at the New Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, after the recent announcement by Alex Neil, Health Secretary. We look forward to the benefits this service will provide.

The British Cardiovascular Intervention Society have published the Adult Interventional Procedures Audit Returns for 2011. This data was presented at the recent BCIS Autumn meeting in Glasgow, and will be of interest to all involved in interventional cardiology.

Increased provision of primary PCI and improvements in delays to treatment are some of the findings.

Focusing on the topic of Angina the content is delivered in seven modules that are available free to all.

​

The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh has successfully treated its first patients in Scotland, with Aortic Stenosis, who were too ill to have open heart surgery with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI).

​

It is expected that the specialist operation will be suitable for around 50 Scottish patients a year.

​

The new service will be closely monitored over the next six to 12 months, and consideration will be given to introducing a regional model of service, or extending to two sites.

The BHF Mending Broken Hearts is the most ambitious research programme we’ve ever carried out and we're at a critical stage in the UK's fight against heart failure.

 

When you have a heart attack your heart will suffer damage that can never be repaired. In some people this can lead to heart failure, which in severe cases leaves you disabled and gasping for breath, with a life expectancy of less than five years.

For the first time, BCIS are now publishing an analysis based on each individual consultant PCI operator’s activity and outcomes. The aim is to become even more open about the way in which patients are treated, and is part of a NHS wide increase in the transparency of reporting the way patients are treated and the outcomes they might expect from a high quality service.

 

These web pages provide some background about coronary heart disease and treatment by interventional techniques. There is also information about the way in which we assess the quality of PCI care being provided.

The 2011 annual report of the National Audit of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) was published on 29th January 2013. More PCI centres are treating more heart attack patients faster. The report highlights the progress within hosptals to expand PCI services to treat more patients. Year on year improvement in treating patients within target times, but transfers can delay treatment by 50 minutes..
